Perhaps you remember the SNL episode when Jerry Seinfeld was guest hosting and he did a Mary -Katherine Gallagher skit w/ Molly Shannon in which MK is all in love with him and he's the star of the Jewish High School Basketball team. In the very last line of the skit, MK does her trademark cheerleading lunge, throws her arms in the air and cheers, "Jewish Boys!" Well, I totally identify. I think I have mentioned before that I had a thing for certain polynesian men and really, really smart Jewish boys (For example, Ben Stein, the older conservative version, Jon Stewart, the younger and typically liberal version). I married a "white poly," but apparently the Jewish Boy thing lives on in my subconscience. I posted this comment to a friend earlier:
I have been meaning to blog this, but since I have to take a unisom every night when I am pregnant, I have been getting a lot of dream sleep. And since I have crazy hormones coursing thru my veins, the dreams are kooky. And since I watch The Daily Show on tivo almost every night before I sleep, I have been dating Jon Stewart in my dreams. But it's not "now me" and "now him," it's like 10-years-ago, post-college-pre-marriage us (cuz we are both obviously happily married with children now, duh). He is just in my dreams every single night and I think it's hilarious. My baby is going to be half Jewish.
PS: I have heard snide remarks from my conservative friends about my listening to NPR and watching The Daily Show, as if my political beliefs and values couldn't stand up to hearing another point of view. I'll try not to be insulted by the insinuation, but I think it is very healthy to listen to all kinds of ideas in order to form your own (Not to mention the insanely sharp wit on TDS and the very in-depth and people-based reporting on NPR shows like All Things Considered). It's kind of like being afraid to visit someone else's church because it would make me less of a Mormon. I have always been strengthened by opposition and it's nice to be well-informed and understand at least where other people are coming from. And if I couldn't be Mormon, I would be Jewish any day. Well, a Jew for Jesus maybe.

Well you're very close to being Jewish, what tribe are you from? Every time I see Jon Stewart, I think of your crush on him, like at the Academy Awards. NPR is aweful (sorry), but Jon is pretty funny, even when bashing my beloved Bush. I'm more loyal to Rush and Sean Hannity, so don't have time for NPR too much. Jon is just so funny, that you can laugh no matter where your political views fall. So Rich is a white Poly..... nice.
I also love Ruch and Sean but I can't pick up talk radio in the house. I try to plan my Bozeman trip between 10 and 1 so I can catch Rush. I have been listening to Rush since I was 16 and I probably always will, just for the "being-informed" factor, but about 10 years ago, he got so pompous that I could only stand to listen in small doses. The same thing has happened to Bill O'Reilly. I still love Sean Hannity, though I have never lived in a place where I can get his radio show and we dont' get Fox on dish. Shucks. PS: I am an Ephraimite, of course.
I think you are smart to look at both sides of the picture and that will be good a trait to instill in your children. NPR's political voice is definitely anti-Bush administration, but their feature stories and programs are brilliant and well thought out -- same goes for public television.
We have Dish and we get Fox News on channel 205.

meh, I don't need unisom and pregnancy hormones to have inappropriate dreams about Jon Stewart...he's really a very funny man. I think women are innately drawn to men who can entertain for the long run. Looks only last so long, and then those go away. Humor endures...so we could say Jon Stewart must have great endurance.
okay really, snide remarks about TDS. Big \/\/hatever. I guess there's just a difference between well informed conservatives and those who blindly follow. You find that in the church, of course, too. They call it 'faith' sometimes, but I think it's the way people with weak convictions cope, or they are simply afraid that their core values will be shaken by hearing both sides? I dunno. Silly argument to make, though. TDS is just good times, no matter which side of the fence they fall on. Maybe those friends would prefer The Colbert Report.
So I'm just thinking that your white poly name should be Jamie NineCowPostLingoMelin. If your next baby is a boy, he could play for BYU football with a name like that.
I had a mission companion from Samoa and I spent our first day together learning how to say and pronounce her first name (the last name wasn't so hard)--I still remember: Maliumaiaigafealofani. I kid you not. She was/is a lovely person and I wish we were in touch.
