ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY: 3/30/1981
I was in the fourth grade in Weatherford, Oklahoma and our class was in the basement of a church because they were repairing the school. Our teacher turned on the TV in our classroom and had us watch the news. Ronald Reagan had been shot. I was mostly worried about my three-year-old brother who worshipped Ronald Reagan...this would rock his little world (and it did). But Sam turned out fine and so did Reagan....thank heaven!

I was in my first year of college. Reagan was the first President I ever voted for. I came out of class and got in the car to go to my part time job at the airport in California when I heard the news. Funny how we remember where we were when we first heard the news the President had been shot. My Dad was in Washington DC for a convention and Reagan had actually just finished talking to them and when he had left the building is when he got shot- so my Dad was listening to him just minutes before he got shot. Pretty wierd.
WOW! That's an amazing story! I remember when I first went to DC in 1995 and took a trolley tour where my friend was working as the tour guide. One of the highlights is the sidewalk outside of the Wahington Hilton...interesting to think your dad was inside. I am going to adda link that kind of says what I was thinking: I am glad he lived and that the "plot" was nothing more than a crazy man, or we could all be speaking Russian by now!
I had gone to the same convention with my dad the year before but Carter was the President and I got to hear him, and stood maybe 20 feet away from where he was. It was cool, but would have much rather seen Reagan the following year. I remember how impressed I was in how well Reagan handled himself during that time, joking with the doctors and all. "I hope all of you are Republicans!" (as he looked up at the docs.
We took the kids to see George W. Bush the year before we moved to Montana. He came to Shreveport, LA and we got tickets. Very exciting stuff.
