WARNING: Scary Thyroidectomy Images Comin' Right Up...

These look horrific...I am sorry, I didn't realize how gross they are, but this is how I'm lookin' today! Too bad it's not Halloween! (Lisa A., did yours look gnarley like this? I am told it's a little worse than usual becaus the thyroid was enlarged, but...ew!). I got adjusted at the chiro today--couldn't stand layin' in bed anymore, even though I am exhausted now from going out. It's freezing cold and super snowy, so I'm happy to sleep it off. My SIL, Amie, just came from Helena and brought me a basket of bath goodies and took all the little boys to swim at Chico (Heidi and Addie are at school). So I am hoping Jill can take a little nap now...poor thing! I'm gonna go join her. All is well...XOXO

Those look WAY LESS gory than I'd thought. Not bad at all.
You're so smart to go to the chiropractor, too.

Lisa A. reporting in. Mine is in exactly the same spot, but a tiny bit less wide (side to side) and I don't remember having any of that bruising. Instead of one strip of tape, my doc used about a dozen little vertical ones and somebody told me, "Whatever you do, don't pull off the tape. Let it come off on its own," so I did. Each little strip graaaaaadually peeled off little by little. It was like watching birch bark peel. And itchy.

I remember being conscious of the weight of my chest for the first time. I could literally feel my skin pulling down whenever I stood up. And, oddly, the back of my neck was very stiff. A nurse in the hospital told me to use my hand to lift up my head when I sat up in bed, and I was still in the habit of doing that at least a year later. (One day I caught myself doing it and thought, "Why am I still doing this?" Habits are powerful.)

My scar was pink for about two years. I can still see it "smiling" at me in all my mission pics. Now, 15 years after the operation, it is totally flesh color. I wear a 1/4 inch wide gold chain that I had sized to lay right on the scar (graduation gift from parents) and I can't remember the last time anyone outside my doctor's office said anything about the scar.

The skin from the scar up to my chin was numb from where nerves had been severed during the operation. (This bummed me out because I was really a big fan of a little neck nibble.) But, happily, this too has healed.

Besides the initial surgery recovery, the worst I felt was when they took me off Synthroid (or generic equivilent) for six weeks for some sort of follow-up test five years afterwards. Ugh, so tired, so constipated! This test was related to the fact that I had a cancerous tumor in the cyst. I suspect/hope that that won't be necessary for you.

I was also very annoyed by the idea that I would have to be on meds for the rest of my life. It felt like a sentence. But I try to think of it this way: "I'd happily take vitamins every day for the rest of my life, right? So, let's just think of Synthoid as Vitamin S."

I'm sorry you had to go through this, but I'm glad you are home and being taken care of, and I hope that in the long run this has a beneficial effect on your health.

Cousin! I'm SO glad you're okay! Those aren't too bad...the bruising, I agree, is a bit of a surprise. Maybe your thyroid was just stubborn, so it needed a little extra *oomph!* to get it removed.

I hope you got your nap and that everything is slowly returning to normal or better-than! Love ya!

Glad to hear that all went well with the surgery. You have such a cute family. The kids are all growing so fast. Say hi to Rich! Hope you feel much better soon.

Hi Jamie! I hope you get feeling better soon. I will be back in Livingston on March 20th. Maybe I'll stop in and make sure you're recovering alright. I wish I were closer, but I know you are in good hands.

That looks like it hurts. It is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Hope you get better soon.

Ugh! Mine didn't look anything like that! There was an obvious incision, but mine was barely noticeably, even immediately after the operation. And MY thyroid was the size of a grown man's fist!
